The Table as Sacred Ground

Every shared table tells a story. Whether it’s a family dinner, a potluck with friends, or a quiet meal for two, something sacred happens when people sit down together and break bread. Gratitude finds its way into the conversation, and the table becomes more than furniture; it becomes a bridge.

Around a table, laughter is amplified, differences soften, love joins in. Every dish holds memory, and every gesture, passing the salt, pouring the water, becomes a small act of love.

The Many Tables of My LifeOver the years, I’ve been blessed to share many tables, from family feasts to Unity Palo Alto gatherings, from mountain dinners with friends to quiet breakfasts with Jim. Each one reminds me that connection is the real nourishment.

When I was younger, holidays were bustling and loud, full of relatives, kids, music, and stories that never quite stayed on track. Now, my table has become smaller, quieter, but no less rich. The conversations are slower, the silences more comfortable, and the gratitude deeper.

And sometimes, it’s not a literal table at all, it’s a shared moment, a conversation, or a phone call that feeds the spirit just as much as a meal ever could.

The Table of InclusionNot everyone feels welcome at every table, and I think about that often, about the people who eat alone, or who have lost someone, or who feel left out for reasons unseen.

Part of gratitude, to me, is widening the table, making room for the unexpected guest, the new voice, the different perspective. When we practice inclusion, we reflect the heart of Spirit: generous, open, endlessly welcoming.

A shared table says, You belong… We are One. And that might be the holiest sentence we ever speak.

The Simple Grace of SharingAs I prepare for Thanksgiving week, I think about how gratitude grows best when it’s shared. It multiplies with every smile, every plate passed, every kind word exchanged.

In my family, there’s always a moment when someone says, “Remember when…” and we all laugh, grateful for the thread of memory that ties us together. Those moments are the true feast, nourishment for the soul.

The Table as a Metaphor for Life

Every day offers us a table of some kind, a place to meet the world. It might be a work project, a volunteer team, a coffee chat, or an online collaboration. Each is an opportunity to bring our best selves, to listen, to serve, to connect.

When we sit at life’s tables with open hearts, gratitude naturally takes a seat beside us.

Today’s Blessing

Today, I give thanks for the tables I’ve shared, and the people who’ve sat across from me, each one offering a taste of grace.

May I remember that abundance is not about how much food is on the table, but how much love surrounds it. May my table always have room for one more. And may I never take for granted the miracle of gathering, eating, and simply being together.
