Thank you, Michelle, for your beautiful photos from Africa

Gratitude for Bold Beauty

Every once in a while, nature delivers something so striking that it stops us in our tracks. The red-and-teal bee-eater captured in your photograph does exactly that. It bursts into the sky like a living jewel, defying any expectation of what a bird “should” look like. Its colors are fearless. Its presence is unforgettable. And its flight is a reminder that beauty is not always soft or subtle, sometimes it is bold, radiant, and unapologetically alive.

As we continue honoring Africa’s wild gifts this December, we pause today to celebrate the beauty that makes the world brighter simply by existing. And with full hearts, we thank Michelle Kelsey and Sue Guzman, who shared their remarkable African adventure and made these reflections possible.

The Courage to Be Colorful

The bee-eater is not trying to be impressive. It is simply being itself. Its brilliant plumage isn’t a decoration; it’s part of its essence. And that is part of the lesson: genuine beauty comes from authenticity, not performance. Boldness doesn’t require noise. It requires truth.

So many of us tone ourselves down without even realizing it. We soften our voices, minimize our strengths, or hide our passions because we worry about standing out. This small bird reminds us that being vibrant is not a flaw, it is a gift.

Gratitude helps us celebrate the qualities that make each of us unique. It helps us honor our own “colors,” whatever they may be.

Color as a Form of Joy

Color affects the human spirit in immediate, wordless ways. The moment we see something vivid, whether a flower, a painting, or a bird in flight, the heart responds. Shoulders relax. The breath deepens. Something inside us brightens.

In that moment, we’re reminded that joy can be simple. Pure. Unexpected. Sometimes it’s a splash of turquoise against the sky. Sometimes it’s a red streak moving through sunlight. Joy does not always arrive with a reason. Often, it simply appears and lifts the spirit without explanation.

When we practice gratitude, we become more sensitive to these subtle gifts. Beauty becomes easier to see. Joy becomes easier to feel.

The Artistry of Mother Earth

This bee-eater looks almost hand-painted, like a brushstroke of watercolor in motion. It is one of the many examples of Earth as an artist, using color, texture, movement, and form in ways that even our most creative minds could never fully imagine.

Every living creature carries a kind of artistry. Some express it through camouflage, some through elegance, and some, like this bird, through brilliant, impossible color. When we pause long enough to really see these small masterpieces, gratitude rises naturally. It is impossible not to feel awe in the presence of such beauty.

Beauty That Moves With Purpose

Despite its breathtaking colors, the bee-eater is not fragile. It is agile, determined, and skillful. It hunts insects on the wing with precision and grace. Every flash of color is also an expression of instinct, intelligence, and strength.

Beauty and purpose are not opposites, they often live in the same place.

This bird teaches us that we don’t have to sacrifice purpose to be beautiful, nor beauty to be purposeful. We can move through life with both intention and radiance.

Letting Beauty Transform You

Looking at this photograph, something softens inside us. Something opens. Beauty does that. It changes how we feel even if nothing else in our life has changed. It creates breathing room in the heart.

Today’s reflection invites you to let one bold, brilliant moment of beauty transform your mood, your day, your energy. Let it remind you that the world is full of wonder. Let it lift your spirit as effortlessly as the bird lifts itself into the sky.

May this vibrant little creature remind you: You, too, are allowed to shine. You, too, carry colors the world needs. And you, too, are part of the beauty of this Earth.
