Grateful for the Space Between Seasons

Sunset over a field of flowers and caption: “You can’t go back and you can’t skip ahead. The only way is through — and through is sacred.”
There’s a quiet in the air this time of year

There’s a quiet in the air this time of year, a kind of gentle hush that settles in, just before the world begins to shift again. The sun still shines, but softer. The evenings arrive a little earlier. There’s a scent in the breeze that wasn’t there last week, something earthy, something new. Summer hasn’t quite ended, and autumn hasn’t quite begun.

We are in the space between seasons.

And that, in itself, is something to be grateful for.

The Beauty of the In-Between

In a culture that thrives on milestones, announcements, and clarity, the in-between can feel uncomfortable. It’s not a beginning. It’s not an ending. It’s a pause. A waiting room. A breath.

But this liminal space, this transition, is sacred. It’s where deep change begins, quietly. Where roots stretch deeper even if nothing seems to be blooming yet. Where clarity takes shape before it becomes words. Where healing happens behind the scenes.

There is profound wisdom in the places we often rush through.

Learning to Linger

Nature doesn’t force the shift from one season to the next. The trees don’t rush to shed their leaves. The light doesn’t snap from golden to gray. Instead, the world takes its time. It takes time to soft, to yield, to unfold at its own pace.

What if we let ourselves do the same?

What if we gave ourselves permission to linger in the space between what was and what’s next? To honor the uncertainty. To appreciate the quiet. To rest right here in this present moment?

Transitions are not blank pages. They are fertile ground.

Gratitude Without Definition

We don’t need clarity to be grateful. We don’t need certainty. We don’t even need resolution.

We can be grateful for the process. Grateful for the unfolding, the becoming, the way life reshapes us slowly, gently, in ways we don’t always recognize at first.

We can say thank you for:

  • The unscheduled afternoons

  • The conversations that change our perspective

  • The unanswered questions

  • The feeling that something is coming… even if we don’t know what

Gratitude doesn’t require a final draft. It only asks that we notice what’s present, right here and now, and honor it.

The Sacred Work of Holding Space

The space between seasons is a teacher. It asks us to trust. To listen. To hold space for what is not yet visible.

If you are in a time of transition right now – emotionally, spiritually, professionally – know that this too is part of the rhythm. You don’t have to rush. You don’t have to force an outcome. You can be exactly where you are, and let that be enough. Let the world come to you.

The leaves will fall when they’re ready. The harvest will come when it’s time. Your next season will arrive. But for now, you are in the space where the roots are growing.

And that is worthy of gratitude.

A Practice for Today

  • Step outside. Notice the quality of the air, the color of the light.

  • Take three slow breaths. Ask nothing of yourself except presence.

  • Whisper a thank you. Not for something you’ve gained or solved — but simply for this moment. This pause. This space between.

You are not lost. You are not late. You are in transition — and transition is holy ground.
