Celebrating the Magic of Shared Vision
Gratitude sometimes arrives like a lightning strike — sudden, clear, illuminating. That’s how I felt working side-by-side with Chieri Abe, a brilliant 21-year-old Menlo College senior, on our article Navigating the Tech Job Market in 2025: A Five-Decade Perspective. https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7335681674443137024/
What began as a simple cross-generational conversation – a very tough job market to enter after graduation – blossomed into a shared project filled with curiosity, wisdom, humor, and mutual respect. Chieri brought her fresh, grounded insights into today’s career landscape. I brought 50 years of lived experience and marketing perspective. Together, we shaped something more layered, more vibrant — and more useful — than either of us could have written alone.
I am filled with gratitude for the spark that can ignite when two generations meet, not in competition, but in creative collaboration.
Wisdom Meets Wonder
There’s something magical that happens when experience and emerging talent sit at the same table. I’ve seen it many times across my decades in Silicon Valley, but this experience was different, perhaps because it wasn’t about hierarchy. It wasn’t mentorship or management. It was partnership.
Chieri didn’t just bring new ideas. She brought her full self – grounded, kind, wise beyond her years – and she met me in a space of shared purpose. We weren’t trying to prove anything. We were trying to serve: to help job seekers thrive in a world of constant change.
In that space, my seasoned voice found new life. Her emerging voice found a platform. Together, we created something that honored both the past and the present.
Bridging Generations Through Gratitude
So often in life, we’re told that generations don’t understand each other. That gaps are too wide, values too different, technologies too overwhelming. But I’ve found that gratitude is a powerful bridge. When we enter a collaboration with appreciation, for each other’s perspectives, gifts, and humanity, the gap dissolves.
This project reminded me that age isn’t a barrier. It’s a blessing. I’m 71. Chieri is 21. We didn’t meet in the middle. We met in the light of shared intention. And that light made our work – and our connection – shine brighter.
Making Space for One Another
Gratitude in collaboration means making space – not just for the task at hand, but for the person sitting across from you. It means listening fully. Asking questions without assuming answers. Letting your ego rest so ideas can rise.
Whether you’re working with a colleague, a neighbor, or a granddaughter, I encourage you to enter that space with curiosity. You may be surprised at what blooms. You may find yourself, as I did, feeling inspired, energized, and deeply grateful.
A Thank You Across Time
Today, I thank Chieri — and every young mind daring to think big in this beautifully complex world. I thank the mentors and elders who hold doors open with humility. I thank the bridge-builders, the quiet collaborators, and the brave souls who believe we are stronger when we share.
Gratitude isn’t bound by age. It’s alive wherever people come together with open hearts and a willingness to grow.
