Each time our heart loves, it expands to hold even more

The Heart as Center

The heart is more than a muscle that pumps life through our bodies. It is also the center of our emotional and spiritual being. When our grateful hearts are steady, we live from love, compassion, and peace. When they are unsettled, everything around us feels shaky.

On World Heart Day, I pause in gratitude for the heart, both the physical organ that sustains my life and the metaphorical heart that holds my capacity for love, courage, and connection. Yung Pueblo’s wisdom reminds me that steadiness in the heart is not only a gift to ourselves but also to others. When we cultivate inner peace, we invite those around us into that same calm, instead of being swept up in their tension.

Gratitude for the Physical Heart

First, there is the simple miracle of the physical heart. It beats faithfully, day and night, without our asking. It carries oxygen to every cell, fuels every step, and makes life itself possible. How often do I take this for granted?

Gratitude for the heart begins here, with wonder at the rhythm that has sustained us from our first breath until now. Each heartbeat is a reminder of life’s resilience. Each pulse is proof that we are here, alive, with another chance to live fully.

The Emotional Heart

But beyond the physical, the heart also symbolizes our emotional life. It is where we feel love, sadness, joy, and courage. It is where we connect with others at a soul level. When I think of my own journey, I know my heart has been through seasons of breaking, healing, and blooming again.

There were years when fear dominated, when my hearing loss and hyperacusis made the world feel dangerous. My heart often felt weary, on edge, bracing against the noise. And yet, through patience, gratitude, and friendship, my heart slowly steadied again and my brain rewired itself. That process has made me more compassionate, more willing to pause, and more grateful for every moment of ease.

Steadiness as a Gift

Yung Pueblo’s quote speaks directly to this truth: when we cultivate steadiness within, we change not only ourselves but also the energy of those around us. Peace is contagious. A calm heart can soften a room full of tension. A steady presence can be the anchor others need.

I have seen this in friendships, in community, and in family life. When I choose to rest in gratitude instead of anxiety, when I breathe before reacting, when I allow myself to be steady, others feel it too.  Instead of adding to the drama, I help create a ripple of calm.

Gratitude for the Heart’s Lessons

The heart teaches us many lessons: patience, forgiveness, resilience, vulnerability. Each time it breaks, it also shows us how to heal. Each time it loves, it expands to hold even more.

In my Women’s Group at Unity Palo Alto, I see hearts at play, laughing, connecting, and supporting one another. Each gathering reminds me that steady hearts together create joy that radiates far beyond one room. Gratitude for those moments is gratitude for the heart’s power to bind us in friendship and love.

A Harvest of Peace

This month we have been exploring Harvesting the Heart. On this World Heart Day, the theme takes on both literal and symbolic meaning. The harvest of the heart is peace. It is the steadiness that grows when we practice gratitude, patience, and compassion day by day.

We cannot always control what comes our way, illness, noise, loss, and uncertainty. But we can choose how to meet it. A steady heart, grateful and rooted in peace, can transform even the hardest moments into opportunities for love.

Today, I am grateful for the miracle of the heart, its steady rhythm, its resilience, and its boundless capacity for love. May we each cultivate peace within, so that our hearts become a harvest of calm for ourselves and for the world.
