A Celebration of Vibrancy
The iris doesn’t shy away from boldness. It stands tall, petals unfolding like silk flags, declaring its presence with striking color — royal purple, soft lavender, golden yellow, electric blue. Its name, derived from the Greek word for rainbow, reminds us of the full spectrum of life and feeling.
In a world that sometimes asks us to be less — to mute our voices, to smooth our edges, to blend in — the iris says, Be vivid. Be you. In full bloom. In full color.
Gratitude for color is gratitude for the diversity of life — not just in nature, but in the richness of our own experiences, personalities, and expressions. Each hue has its place. Each tone its story. When we appreciate the fullness of the palette, we begin to see beauty not in sameness, but in variety.
Living in Full Color
So much of modern life can feel greyed out — overwhelmed by routine, stress, or sameness. But nature offers a daily reminder: life is meant to be colorful. Not just visually, but emotionally, spiritually, energetically.
Gratitude acts like a prism, splitting the light of our everyday lives into visible brilliance. It helps us see — and celebrate — every shade of our journey.
Think of the people you love. Are they all one type? One color? Or do they fill your life with unique qualities — humor, strength, gentleness, courage, curiosity? Gratitude sees each gift clearly and says, thank you — not in general, but in specific, brilliant color.
The Courage to Be Seen
The iris blooms boldly. It doesn’t ask for permission to be beautiful. It doesn’t worry whether its shade is “too much.” It simply shows up — expressive, proud, and rooted.
Can we give ourselves that same permission?
To wear the colors we love. To speak our truth. To let ourselves be fully seen — even when it feels vulnerable. Gratitude helps us embrace our own radiance without apology.
And when we do, we give others permission to do the same.
A Practice of Colorful Awareness
Try this this week: Each day, notice a color that draws your attention. Let it be your invitation to pause and offer thanks.
The orange of a ripe fruit
The deep green of a shaded leaf
The blue of the sky before rain
The soft pink of a stranger’s smile
The purple stripes of an iris in bloom
With each color, let your gratitude deepen. Ask: What does this color awaken in me? What feeling, what memory, what part of myself longs to be honored today?
Let color be your teacher. Let gratitude be your response.
The Iris as a Symbol
The iris is also a symbol of communication and faith — bridging heaven and earth, emotion and intellect, mystery and clarity. In ancient times, it was planted on graves to guide the soul home. In modern gardens, it reminds us to live vividly, love boldly, and speak with beauty. On the forest trail, it pops up boldly, just to say “Hello.”
Each color carries its own energy. Each person, too. When we honor this, we honor the fullness of life.
Gratitude helps us see not just what is bright and beautiful, but also what is complex, nuanced, and layered. It helps us love not only the light, but the shadow it contrasts against.
It is in this full spectrum that we find depth — and connection.
May we see the world in richer color. May we welcome every shade — in ourselves, in others, in life. May we, like the iris, stand tall in our truth, bloom in our own season, and trust that our colors belong.
And may we give thanks — for purple-striped petals, painted skies, and the radiant beauty of living in full bloom.
